'BEHIND THE BAND'

As a queer fronted punk rock band, we felt it was time someone spoke out about the state of life at the moment, especially for those who don’t have a voice. With our newest album, a mixture of punk and hard rock, we want to talk about these issues in the way so many have before: through music, and to bring this music to the mainstream so even more can express themselves.

Monstrosity is a band formed for the people who don't often see themselves in the media, and extended for all those who enjoy music, so we hope you all find a little bit of yourself reflected in our lyrics.

Hey! I’m the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for Monstrosity :)

I picked up guitar as a teenager because, embarrassingly, I thought it would make me seem cool. I met the others through our individual music and the band formed from there. As a trans individual, I felt it essential to create a voice for the voiceless; to try to bring about a form of change or at least publicise the issues being faced by so many at the moment. My main inspiration comes from older punk bands and metal bands like KoRn, so I try to recreate that through my lyrics and messages. I think this will also be reinforced by our music videos which I’m so glad I had the opportunity to make.

Apart from music, I’m also a huge wrestling nerd. I love the more unique and alternative characterisation of wrestlers. My dream would be to become one of the bands wrestlers regularly turn to to find entrance music.

At home I have four pet rats. I got them during my GCSEs, and they were a huge help with relieving stress, so I like sharing them with the others when we practice ‘round mine. I also have a new cat called Mikey who likes bonding with the other’s cats.

That’s it from me but I hope you enjoy exploring the rest of our work <3

Hello! I’m the lead guitarist for Monstrosity!

I started playing guitar when I was really young, and by guitar, I mean stretched out hair ties! But I enjoyed it enough that when I was old enough, I got an acoustic guitar and lessons. My main inspiration was the Eagles, as I started with rock, but I also drew a lot of passion from watching MTV Rock and reading Kerrang! magazine when I wasn’t actively practicing. Around this time, I also began regularly watching Eurovision which introduced me to the metal scene, and to more of what we as a band play now.

Apart from music, I’m also a keen painter. I love painting landscapes to relax, especially considering how intense being the lead guitarist can get. It’s all very Bob Ross-esque but I enjoy the down time it provides for me.

Unlike the others, I don’t have any pets to contribute to the band with. But I love spending time with all of theirs so it’s not the end of the world! Plus, I don’t think there’d be any room for another animal when we practice lol so maybe it’s for the best, at least until we find a bigger rehearsal space.

Hopefully we’ll see you at one of our gigs :)

Heya :) I’m the bassist and main backing vocals for Monstrosity!

I started playing the bass when my cousin gave me his old bass one Christmas after he was gifted a new one (still forever thankful to him for it). I began practicing with soft rock, my main inspirations were a mixture of 1970s disco, motown and the Eagles, before I met Kil and he indoctrinated me into more heavy music (love him for it though). After that we found Maia and Len, and the band was born!

When it comes to my interests, I like to pretend I still live in the 2000s! I’m a huge fan of sitcoms, such as Parcs and Recs and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and comics, mainly Daredevil or the Punisher. Another big thing about me is my love for 2000s video games (I’m literally surgically attached to my Wii) and Maia will often convince me to play horror games with her, or Animal Crossing if she’s being nice.

My contribution to the band animal wise is my cat, Iroh. I swear she likes the others more than me! But like Cookie, she was an inspiration for our album cover and subsequent merch based on it. Sometimes she tries to commandeer Lenin’s drum set but I don’t think they mind.

I don’t think there’s much else to say so thank you for supporting us <3

Hiya! I’m the lead guitarist and occasional vocals for Monstrosity <3

I became interested in music, and specifically the drums, as my parents would often play me rock and goth music when I was growing up. I love the sound and was desperate to recreate it in my own way, which led me to join the others and create the band.

I am a big fan of horror, specifically horror video games, and I talk the others’ ears off about it all the time! I would love for the band to do a project similar to Misfits, where we create original songs based on horror classics as I’ve always been mesmerised by the crossover. That’s definitely my dream for the future of my music career. I’m also really into musical theatre, which is probably surprising coming from this type of band, but I (and the others) have a lot of diversity in my music taste.

At home I have a cat called Cookie who, along with the other of the band’s cats, was an inspiration for our logo designed by Kil! I like to bring her to practices as she enjoys the music (and the attention), and we just love having her around.

That’s all I’ve got to say for now so thank you for reading :)

Their early work was a little but too scene for me. But when Monster In Society came out I think they really came into their own. Commercially and artistically, the whole album has a refined and melodic sensibility that really makes it a cut above the rest.

TRANSPIRE & ND SAFE SPACE

Transpire is a charity and community for trans individuals in the South Essex region, local to where the band formed.

We partnered with Transpire so more people could become aware of the community they offer to local trans individuals. Members of the band have greatly benefited from their meet ups and online support, so this charity is very close to our hearts.

Neurodivergent Safe Space is a community centre for neurodivergent teens and young adults struggling with their mental health.

Located in Southend, the manager is a close friend of the band, whose members can often be found in the centre for meet ups and chats.
